Web Accessibility at EKU

Web accessibility is the idea that every person who has access to the internet can view, browse, interact, and understand the same content. Too many websites are not created with web accessibility in mind. Whether intentional or not, they exclude the segment of the population that in many ways stands to gain the most from the internet.
The concept of creating an accessible website means designing for the widest range of people's abilities. Not all web page visitors are using the standard browsers. Some use adaptive technologies such as screen readers or text-based browsers, have their browser graphics turned off, or may not be able to use a mouse or keyboard. Some users also have physical or cognitive disabilities that impact their use of a web page. Accessible web pages can also help PDAs or phones browse the web.
Universal design is the goal for all – it benefits everyone.
Usability refers to a user's expectations regarding the design, placement, and operation of page elements. For instance, where do users expect a link for the home page? Where do users expect navigation? It makes more sense to examine current trends than try to 'reinvent' the web.
Universal Design:
- is appealing and useful to all users
- adapts to a full range of user ability and preference
- is easy to understand and use, regardless of skill, knowledge or concentration
- provides essential information regardless of sensory abilities
- minimizes effects of unintended actions
- does not fatigue users
- considers physical requirements for a user's body size, posture, or mobility
EKU's Goal
EKU is committed to serving all audiences by adhering to established international web standards and strives to meet user expectations and experience.
Our goal for campus-wide accessibility is complete compliance with the law. More importantly, we want to adhere to the spirit of the ADA and provide barrier-free learning with universal design. Just as curb cuts and automatic door openers provide physical access to our facilities, accessible web sites and on-line learning provide access to our online community.
Not all of our pages meet these standards, but we are working toward this goal.
